Genesis Villanueva gets little playing time at Bayside but says she enjoys camaraderie of Commdores teammates and coach Steve Piorkowski.
It took a while for Genesis Villanueva’s teammates to catch on about her brother.
That is, until Charlotte Tuckner, her best friend on Bayside’s basketball team, got an inkling during a visit to Villanueva’s home.
“I walked into her house and it was, like, MTV Crib status,” said Tuckner, a junior forward, recalling the first time she stepped foot inside of Villanueva’s Bayside home. “We walked downstairs and there were like all these huge trophies of her brother’s. She told me her brother plays ball, but I didn’t know it was for the NBA.”
To professional basketball fans, he’s Charlie Villanueva, the Milwaukee Bucks forward, former UConn national champion and Newtown HS and Blair (N.J.) Academy star. But to Genesis, a 17-year-old Bayside senior, Charlie is simply big bro.
“Some of my teammates were shocked when they found out, but I was like, ‘It’s just my brother,'” Villanueva said. “I definitely wasn’t going to brag about it, but I’m proud of him.”
